miniaturization and electrochemical performance enhancement of electrodes and microelectrode arrays in emerging long-term implantable neural stimulation devices improves specificity, functionality, and performance of these devices. however, surgical site and post-implantation infections are amongst the most devastating complications after surgical procedures and implantations. additionally, with the increased use of antibiotics, the threat of antibiotic resistance is significant and is increasingly being recognized as a global problem. therefore, the need for alternative strategies to eliminate post-implantation infections and reduce antibiotic use has led to the development of medical devices with antibacterial properties. in this work, we report on the development of electrochemically active antibacterial platinum-iridium electrodes targeted for use in neural stimulation and sensing applications. a two-step development process was used. electrodes were first restructured using femtosecond laser hierarchical surface restructuring. in the second step of the process, atomic layer deposition was utilized to deposit conformal antibacterial copper oxide thin films on the hierarchical surface structure of the electrodes to impart antibacterial properties to the electrodes with minimal impact on electrochemical performance of the electrodes. morphological, compositional, and structural properties of the electrodes were studied using multiple modalities of microscopy and spectroscopy. antibacterial properties of the electrodes were also studied, particularly, the killing effect of the hierarchically restructured antibacterial electrodes on escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus—two common types of bacteria responsible for implant infections.

background bone defects and nonunion following initial treatment remain significant clinical challenges. the ilizarov method constitutes a fundamental approach for addressing bone defects, and its integration with adjunctive techniques, such as the accordion maneuver, antibiotic spacers, or internal fixation, has become increasingly widespread. despite this, limited research exists on the clinical outcomes specifically related to the use of the ilizarov method combined with the accordion technique for treating long bone defects in the lower limbs. objective this study seeks to systematically review the application of the ilizarov method in combination with the accordion technique for addressing long bone deficiencies in the lower limbs. study design systematic review; level of evidence, 4. methods a systematic review was performed in alignment with the prisma guidelines (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses), involving searches of medline, embase, web of science, and the cochrane library, with the search process concluding on august 20, 2024. the study population consisted of patients with bone defects who underwent treatment using the ilizarov method in conjunction with the accordion technique. the methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the minors (methodological index for non-randomized studies) scoring system. this study recorded and analyzed the participant count for each study that met the inclusion criteria, along with the number of patients who achieved bone healing, the bone and functional outcomes, and complications such as pin infections, pain, and refracture. results drawing from eight studies involving 80 patients with bone defects treated through the ilizarov method combined with the accordion technique, this systematic review evaluated the method’s impact on bone regeneration. of these patients, 24% presented with femoral defects, while 76% had tibial defects. the mean patient age was 32.8 years, with an average follow-up of 25.2 months. the accordion technique involved daily distraction and compression adjustments ranging from 0.25 to 1 mm, typically in more than two cycles, effectively promoting bone healing. the bone healing rate was high, with the majority of patients rated as having excellent or good functional recovery, according to standards such as asami and paley. common complications included superficial pin tract infections (33.75%) and deep pin tract infections (6.25%), both of which were generally manageable with routine treatment. the accordion technique showed promising results in shortening healing time and enhancing the quality of bone healing. conclusion this systematic review demonstrates that despite variations in parameter settings across studies, the ilizarov method combined with the accordion technique consistently shows strong efficacy and safety in promoting bone regeneration and functional recovery. while some complications may arise, they are generally well-managed with standard care. this approach represents a reliable option for complex bone reconstruction, with future research needed to optimize parameters and further enhance clinical outcomes.

background honey, alone or in combination, has been used for wound healing since ancient times and has reemerged as a topic of interest in the last decade. pectin has recently been investigated for its use in various biomedical applications such as drug delivery, skin protection, and scaffolding for cells. the aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate a pectin-honey hydrogel (phh) as a wound healing membrane and to compare this dressing to liquid honey. methods thirty-six adult male sprague-dawley rats were anesthetized and a 2 × 2 cm excisional wound was created on the dorsum. animals were randomly assigned to four groups (phh, lh, pec, and c): in the phh group, the pectin-honey hydrogel was applied under a bandage on the wound; in the lh group, liquid manuka honey was applied; in the pec group, pectin hydrogel was applied (pec); and in the c group, only bandage was applied to the wound. images of the wound were taken at defined time points, and the wound area reduction rate was calculated and compared between groups. results the wound area reduction rate was faster in the phh, lh, and pec groups compared to the control group and was significantly faster in the phh group. surprisingly, the pec group exhibited faster wound healing than the lh group, but this effect was not statistically significant. conclusion this is the first study using pectin in combination with honey to produce biomedical hydrogels for wound treatment. the results indicate that the use of phh is effective for promoting and accelerating wound healing.
